The Oscar-winning Irish actress Brenda Fricker has died at the age of 81. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mrs. Brown in the 1989 film My Left Foot, becoming the first Irish actress to win an acting Oscar. She was also widely known for playing the homeless woman known as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Fricker had a long career on British television, notably as nurse Megan Roach in the BBC series Casualty, appearing from the first episode in 1986 until 2010. Her agent confirmed she died after a short illness. Tributes included a statement from the director of My Left Foot, Jim Sheridan, who described her as an amazing actress, and from Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister, who said 'we will never see the likes of her again.' Fricker had spoken publicly about struggling with depression and described herself as a recluse. She once said her Oscar statuette was used to hold open a bathroom door.
