Seven people, including two police officers, died in a crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough when a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way collided with a marked Cleveland Police armed response vehicle. The officers were named as PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, and the five occupants of the Passat were also killed. The Chief Constable of Cleveland Police, Victoria Fuller, confirmed the deaths and said the matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, urging the public to avoid speculation. The UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was devastated and offered condolences to the families and Cleveland Police.

The United States imposed 50 per cent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods after trade talks collapsed, affecting about 20 billion dollars of trade. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had suspended negotiations, accusing the US of asking too much and offering too little. He announced that Canada would match the tariffs dollar for dollar, with retaliatory measures targeting sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, with details to be released in the coming days. Carney said Canada took the step reluctantly, but would not compromise its sovereignty.
