NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Oxfordshire, praising the UK's defence investment as evidence of a stronger Europe in NATO. Rutte noted the UK's commitment to defence spending, expected to rise to about 2.7% of GDP by next year, and discussed innovation and technology. In an interview, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt agreed the UK is serious about security, saying NATO is becoming less US-dependent, and stressed the need for more financial and military support to Ukraine, with air defences against ballistic missiles a particular gap. Bildt described Russia as aggressive and reckless, and saw no near-term end to the conflict.
At least 20 people, including five children, were killed when an apartment block collapsed in the Gaza Strip, with about 100 people trapped under rubble. The six-storey building had sustained structural damage from an earlier Israeli airstrike, and a UN official said about 400 buildings in Gaza are at risk of collapse. UK inflation rose to 3.1% in the year to August, up from 2.9% in July, driven by higher fuel and airfare costs, and the Bank of England meets tomorrow to decide on interest rates. Hundreds of volunteers joined the search for three-year-old Noah Woods, who disappeared from a playground in Brantham, Suffolk; police said there is nothing to indicate anything sinister at this stage.
The Houthis said they shot down a Saudi F-15 jet, while Saudi Arabia claimed it shot down a drone heading towards Mecca; the Houthis denied targeting Mecca and said their operations focus on oil facilities and military bases. A security correspondent described this as a clear escalation, with potential impact on the world economy. Photos obtained by CBS News showed severe damage to US facilities at bases in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia from Iranian missile and drone attacks. The remaining support acts on Ed Sheeran's US tour pulled out in solidarity with rapper Macklemore, who was dropped over pro-Palestinian remarks on stage; Sheeran said the decision to remove Macklemore was the promoter's, not his.
