A plane carrying 180 passengers from Dubai to Tel Aviv touched down safely after an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia following what Israel described as a potential terrorist attack. Israeli media reported that one pilot stabbed the other as the plane plummeted almost 17,000 feet within a minute, and that passengers helped overpower the pilot while Israel scrambled fighter jets after the emergency call. Tabuk Airport said the captain and first officer had been taken to hospital.
Millions of households will see a steep rise in energy bills in January, with the average bill expected to soar by £276. Forecasters Cornwall Insight are predicting a 16% increase in the energy cap, taking the annual bill for a typical household to just under £2,000, the biggest quarterly increase for four years. Ukraine's prime minister said Russia launched a massive combined attack on the country's energy infrastructure, causing power blackouts in Kiev and several other regions. At least three people were killed in the capital, including a 14-year-old child. Ukraine said it managed to shoot down five ballistic missiles and more than 150 drones, but residential buildings and warehouses were set on fire, and a drone hit a supermarket while shoppers were inside.
Detectives investigating the Grenfell Tower disaster submitted case files of evidence to prosecutors involving 20 companies and 54 individuals. Seventy-two people died in the fire in June 2017, and police said they were asking the CPS to consider charges including corporate manslaughter, gross negligence, manslaughter, health and safety offences, fraud, and misconduct in public office. The high street bakery chain Greggs said it is closing four factories, putting 740 jobs at risk to cut costs. The firm, which reported 7.7% growth in sales during the last quarter, said the savings would enable it to grow in the most cost-efficient manner.
