The actor and comedian Russell Brand has arrived at Southwark Crown Court for the beginning of his trial on rape and sexual assault charges. The 51-year-old, known for films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall, is charged with three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one allegation of indecent assault. The alleged offences relate to six women in the decade between 1999 and 2009. He denies the allegations, and the trial is expected to last up to ten weeks.
Saudi Arabia's energy minister has pledged an equally serious response to deadly Houthi rebel strikes on Riyadh's international airport, in which one person was killed and 11 were injured. Houthi-run television said the Saudis had struck back, hitting Sana'a airport. The Houthis are attacking Saudi Arabia over its support for government forces in Yemen's civil war. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of striking a power plant in its latest attacks on Kharkiv, despite Donald Trump posting on Truth Social yesterday that Kyiv and Moscow had agreed an energy ceasefire. Zelensky said Ukraine had learned about the ceasefire from the media and that there was little sign of Russia abiding by it. He said Russia was trying to use another winter of cold weather against Ukraine.
Reform UK has set out plans to suspend the asylum system for five years if elected. The party's leader, Nigel Farage, says the party would void all existing asylum applications, deport 90,000 people currently with appeal cases and scrap the asylum tribunal system. Labour called the plans a sign of desperation and weakness, while the Tories accused Reform of largely copying existing Conservative policy.
