MI5 Director General Sir Ken McCallum warned that artificial intelligence is supercharging security threats to the UK, saying terrorists have already used AI in drone attacks and could use it to access or create bioweapons. He said MI5 is devoting more resources to countering state threats than during the Cold War, pointing to Russia, Iran, far-right extremism and violence against politicians. A new AI threat assessment centre was announced at MI5.
In other news, a murder investigation began in Waterford City after a house fire killed four people, with two children critically injured. One person died and several were injured in a rollercoaster accident in Georgia, while 13 jurors were selected for Russell Brand's rape and sexual assault trial. Tracey Connelly, mother of Baby P, appeared at a parole hearing and admitted she had lied and deceived; a decision is expected by around 10 November. Around 650 prisoners were released early in England and Wales in the second phase of the government scheme, with more releases expected by Christmas and serious offences excluded. Katie Price gave evidence in the trial of her ex-husband Kieran Hayler, denying she was angry or vengeful towards him; Hayler denies rape and sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.
The IMF upgraded its forecast for UK growth to 1.3 per cent but said households would still feel a squeeze from rising food and drink prices. Newly released 911 calls showed confusion and delays in getting medical help after the botched execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee. Actor RJ Mitte, known for Breaking Bad and disability advocacy, died at his home in Texas, with Bryan Cranston saying he was in deep despair. Ukrainian sailors survived a Russian drone attack on their ship in the Black Sea, though 11 sailors from another vessel were missing, and Selma Blair appeared in court in New York accused of assaulting flight attendants and kicking a police officer, and was bailed.
