5 News began with the suspected bomb plot at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, where the prime minister told the programme there were strong indications Iran played a part but the investigation remained live. Five men had been released on bail without charge, and it was reported one suspect had called 999 himself before a farmer also alerted police to suspicious vehicles and people in balaclavas. In an interview at the Labour conference in Liverpool, the prime minister also discussed cost-of-living measures, fuel duty ahead of the Budget, the Manchester City financial-rules case, and his father's death.

A flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after an apparent fight between the pilots in the cockpit; it was reported that one pilot stabbed the other. A woman whose daughter was on board said her daughter described hearing someone ask for help and a pilot screaming for help.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham used his first Labour conference speech as Prime Minister to announce a national care service funded by tax and free at the point of need, a cut in VAT on electricity bills, renationalisation of water and power, and stronger public control of housing. He said the pensions triple lock would be scrapped from 2030 to help pay for care. Residents and relatives at a Worthing care home said funding was a mess and actions would speak louder than words, and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told the programme the triple lock would be retained in its current form for this Parliament and then adjusted so the state pension still rises by inflation or 2.5 per cent, whichever is higher. She also said VAT would come off electricity bills from Thursday and that Burnham wanted a closer relationship with the EU.

The bulletin led with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying a foreign actor was involved in the suspected UK bomb plot at RAF Fairford. His comments came after five British suspects were released on bail; the men, who live in London, were arrested near the air base in Gloucestershire on Sunday on suspicion of explosive offences and preparing an act of terrorism. Rubio said what happened, what almost happened, and what could have happened in the UK over the weekend was a very serious situation that clearly involved the hands of a foreign actor, though he would not go into great detail yet.
