Axel Rudakubana

BBC ONE West and ITV1 reported that Axel Rudakubana, now 20, appeared in court by video link from Broadmoor Secure Psychiatric Hospital. It was the first time he had been seen since he was given a life sentence for the Southport attacks. He faced four charges relating to alleged incidents at Belmarsh prison: attempted grievous bodily harm of a prison officer, two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, and possessing an offensive weapon in prison. He gave no indication of a plea, and a further hearing was listed for the Old Bailey on 19 October. The most serious charge concerned an allegation that he threw boiling water mixed with sugar through the hatch in his cell door at a prison officer in May last year. ITV1 reported that the officer avoided lasting injury because of prompt medical attention and that Rudakubana claimed prison officers had been poisoning his food when questioned after the alleged attack. ITV1 said Rudakubana allegedly described the sharpened stones as being kept for self defence. Both channels reported that he is serving a life sentence for the murders of Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King and Elsie Dot Stancombe, and for the attempted murder of two adults. BBC ONE West said the attempted murder victims also included eight other girls, while ITV1 said eight other children. BBC ONE West reported the life sentence had a minimum term of 52 years. ITV1 reported that he had been sentenced to life in January last year and that he was moved from Belmarsh prison to Broadmoor following the latest alleged assaults in July this year.
