Mornings

The Israeli government described a mid-air confrontation in the cockpit of a flydubai passenger plane travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv as a jihadist terror attack. It said the co-pilot, an Omani national, stabbed the pilot and sent the jet plunging 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, with 170 people on board. Crew and passengers helped avert disaster, and the plane landed at Tabuk Regional Airport in Saudi Arabia. Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel's defence minister said passengers helped thwart an attempted terrorist attack, and Netanyahu greeted returning passengers in Tel Aviv.

Sky News Today led with a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on which Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot had been arrested after stabbing another and trying to crash the aircraft. The plane plunged 17,000 feet in under two minutes before making an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, and Israeli authorities said they were investigating. Netanyahu said more than 150 people, most of them Israeli, were on board, and that a passenger and a crew member broke into the cockpit and subdued the pilot, who was wielding a knife and trying to sabotage the plane's systems; additional air crew then stabilised the aircraft. Israel's defence minister, Israel Katz, described it as an attempted jihadist terrorist attack that was thwarted, while a correspondent reported passenger accounts of a sharp drop, a commotion at the front, an attempted stabbing and two other pilots on board for a connection flight taking over. A former airline pilot discussed how difficult it would have been to land the plane, including with reported damage to the tail fin.

The programme featured an interview with Andrew Ainsworth, the British costume designer behind the original Star Wars stormtrooper costumes, as original production moulds and a rare 1976 prototype helmet were about to go on auction. He described making the helmet from the same mould, George Lucas ordering 50 helmets, and a nine-year legal case with Lucas to regain IP rights. He also discussed licensing and said he believed skilled people could still work faster than AI in costume design.

Trump also hosted tech executives at the White House to discuss AI regulation, saying the meeting was a form of protection, and new figures from the AI Scam Watch List found almost half of UK adults struggle to tell what is real online, with 24% overwhelmed by increasingly sophisticated scams.
