On 23 July 2026, Mohammed Bashir was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court for assisting a terror plot. He pleaded guilty to preparing acts of terrorism by driving Jihad Alshami to conduct hostile reconnaissance on the UK Defence Academy at Shrivenham in August 2025. The judge imposed a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years. Two months after the reconnaissance, Alshami carried out a knife attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester on 2 October 2025, killing two people before being shot dead by police. Both Sky News and ITV1 HD reported that Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Stephen Watson apologised for not searching Alshami's mobile phones when he was arrested prior to the attack on unrelated charges, including rape.
