The broadcaster and campaigner Dame Esther Rantzen has died at the age of 86 after living with lung cancer. She became a household name presenting and producing the BBC programme That's Life for more than two decades, championed consumer rights, founded Childline and later the Silver Line, and supported the assisted dying campaign after her diagnosis. Her family called her a wonderful mother and cherished grandmother, while Prime Minister Andy Burnham thanked her for changing countless lives and giving voice to people who often went unheard. Tributes also came from figures including Michael Grade and BBC director general Matt Britton.

A pilot was arrested after an altercation in the cockpit of a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Israel's prime minister said one pilot stabbed the other and appeared to try to crash the plane, and that a passenger and crew member overpowered him after the aircraft plunged more than 15,000 feet. More than 170 people, mostly Israelis, were on board; the plane was diverted to Saudi Arabia and later landed in Tel Aviv, where passengers arrived to jubilant scenes. The arrested pilot was being questioned by Saudi authorities.

The bulletin led with a passenger flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv making an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a pilot was stabbed. Reports described a fight between pilots, a descent of 17,000 feet in two minutes, and an emergency signal used for hijacking before the plane landed at Tabuk. The captain and co-pilot were taken to hospital, passengers were reported safe, and an Israeli official said a serious disaster was averted while Israel's national security minister called it a terrorist attack. The Prime Minister defended plans to end the existing pensions triple lock in 2030 to help fund a national care service, after the Conservatives accused him of taking money from pensioners. The bulletin also reported a 4% energy price cap rise from tomorrow and a forecast 16% rise in January, with pressure on the government to offer support.

In his first Labour Party conference speech as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham set out a radical programme of change, including an end in 2030 to the existing pensions triple lock. He said the state pension would still rise each year by at least prices or 2.5 per cent and hold its value relative to earnings over time, with the money saved used to fund a national care service for England covering personal care costs but not residential costs. He also proposed repealing the ban on public ownership of water companies, a new publicly owned Great British Grid, leasehold law changes before Christmas, a change to the Westminster voting system and a deeper relationship with the European Union. Analysis by Faisal Islam said the triple lock changes would save money over time, while Alison Holt said the care plans lacked detail and the pension change alone would not cover the estimated £18.5 billion extra needed a year; people in South Manchester gave mixed views on the proposals.
