A passenger train derailed near Lewes in East Sussex on the afternoon of 13 August 2026. The incident occurred just before 4pm on a Southern Rail service travelling between Haywards Heath and Lewes. Emergency services, including police, paramedics and fire crews, attended the scene. Reports indicated that at least two or three carriages had overturned, with some passengers seen on the roof of the train. A passenger described seeing people with head injuries and blood, and air ambulances were deployed. The Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, said she was deeply concerned.
