Dame Esther Rantzen has died at 86 of lung cancer, her family announced. Tributes focused on her television career, including That's Life, and her campaigns, especially founding Childline and later the Silver Line. Heroic passengers overpowered a pilot on a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv after he reportedly stabbed his co-pilot and the plane plunged 15,000 feet; an off-duty British pilot helped land it safely in Saudi Arabia, and Israel's prime minister said the suspect was arrested. Security analysis on the programme said evidence pointed to a terrorist incident and that Israeli officials believed it was a lone wolf, amid the coming anniversary of the 7 October attacks and elections. Household energy bills were forecast to rise by 16% in January, taking a typical dual-fuel bill to nearly £2,000, with the revised price cap due to increase bills from tomorrow; the programme also reported record diesel prices, higher mortgage rates and measures including removing VAT from electricity bills. MI5 issued a first-of-its-kind alert that UK-linked academics may have unknowingly worked on projects funded by Chinese intelligence, and the grooming gangs inquiry was expanded to Wales and Birmingham. Andy Burnham told ITV News that Brexit had harmed growth and that Britain should move closer to Europe, while he also said there were strong indications Iran played a part in the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford.

The broadcast led with Flydubai flight FZ1073, which took off from Dubai for Tel Aviv and diverted after reports of a fight and a stabbing between the pilots. Passengers described panic and blood, and the plane descended rapidly from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet before making an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. Israeli authorities initially feared a hijacking and scrambled warplanes, and an investigation is under way while Israel plans to bring the stranded passengers home.

At Labour's conference in Liverpool, Prime Minister Andy Burnham proposed a national care service for England after 2030 and said it would be partly paid for by reforming the pensions triple lock from 2030, so increases would be protected against inflation but not rise in line with earnings every year. He said the state would pay for personal care, though not residential costs, with details to be set out by Louise Casey in the spring. He said Brexit had done more harm than good and that options for a closer relationship with the EU, including rejoining, were not off the table, and he backed electoral reform. He became emotional while invoking his late father, pausing for nearly a minute, and said he accepted he might pay a political price. Sir Ed Davey said the care plan could not wait until after the next election, Kemi Badenoch said triple-lock changes would not be enough and more tax rises were inevitable, and Louise Haigh defended the plans and said EU options would be set out later in the year.
