5 News at Lunchtime reported that a British father, Joshua Foster from Essex, had been fined £2,500 after his two-year-old son fell to his death from a hotel window in Cyprus. The court was told Foster thought the window was closed when he placed the boy on the windowsill to show him the view, and the toddler fell nearly 40 feet from the fourth floor. Foster pleaded guilty to causing death through a reckless act.
The broadcast said four people, including three children, had died after a school shooting in the US state of Oregon. Police discovered that the suspect had been shot and killed by a member of the public who pursued the suspect into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend. It also reported that Reform UK was facing further questions about its vetting procedures after undercover filming broadcast by ITV News exposed racist comments and misogyny. The footage showed a local party chairman advising a potential candidate to delete social media posts supportive of far-right activist Tommy Robinson, while Reform MP Robert Jenrick said all political parties had bad apples and argued the party had acted quickly to remove or suspend those in the film.
It was reported that the mother of murderer Vikram Digwa could be in line for deportation. Kiran Kaur was jailed for three years in July for removing the knife used by her son to kill student Henry Nowak from the crime scene, but could serve less than half that sentence under the government's early release scheme. Nineteen people were injured after a collision between a bus and a train on the French side of the Channel Tunnel; authorities said the minibus was heading towards the tunnel entrance when it veered off course and hit the side of a departing train, and none of the injuries were said to be life-threatening. In a closing item, the programme showed Tesla footage posted on social media by Elon Musk of its new sports car, the Roadster, with a claim that flying cars are real; the vehicle travelled up a huge curved ramp and then flipped in the air before landing safely.
