The UK government announced sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including an import ban on goods such as dates, mangoes, and avocados. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband used the term "ethnic cleansing" to describe actions by settler terrorists, declared the occupation unlawful, and stated the UK would no longer support it. Israel reacted angrily, closing the British consulate in Jerusalem, while Palestinian officials welcomed the move and the US expressed concern about destabilisation.
A major technical failure at the UK's air traffic control provider Nats caused widespread disruption at almost all airports, with over 400 flights cancelled and many more delayed. Heathrow and Gatwick were among the worst affected, with no flights taking off or landing for hours. Separately, two Renoir paintings were stolen from a museum in France, though the thieves dropped two of four artworks during their escape. Prince George began his first day at Eton College, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they were surprised by a letter from the King reiterating their non-working royal status, while police admitted they had been warned about a protest in Dover but did not assess the information. New international education data showed English teenagers performing well in reading, maths, and science, but highlighted a global decline in reading skills. Monty Don announced he is leaving Gardener's World after 23 years as presenter.
