Inflation rose to 3.1% in the year to August, driven by soaring fuel and energy prices, adding to cost of living pressures. A Cambridgeshire police sergeant was jailed for four years for misconduct, and a second officer received 16 months. Elsewhere, former Kosovo president Hashim Thaci was sentenced to 25 years for war crimes, a news helicopter crash in Los Angeles killed three people, a Russian drone strike in southern Ukraine killed five, and a man suspected of the Putney Bridge bus push was found dead.

Police in Malawi offered a £13,000 reward for information about the abduction of a British woman. A UK intelligence officer who died in a road crash in Ukraine was named as Major Paul Wilkes. A new book by Earl Spencer reportedly contained an alleged comment by King Charles about Princess Diana; a palace spokesperson responded.
