UK inflation rose to 3.1% in the year to August, up from 2.9% in July, driven by higher petrol, diesel and airfares amid Middle East tensions, with the Bank of England due to make an interest rate decision. In Oxfordshire, the village of Piddington voted overwhelmingly in a symbolic referendum to become independent from the UK in protest at plans to house around 1,250 asylum seekers nearby, while a large-scale search continued for three-year-old Noah Woods, missing from a playground in Suffolk. Elsewhere, a news helicopter crash in Los Angeles killed three people, Saudi Arabia said it shot down a Houthi drone targeting Mecca, and a pro-Palestine activist was acquitted of criminal damage to a statue of Winston Churchill.
The Thirlwall inquiry into the Lucy Letby case strongly criticised managers at the Countess of Chester Hospital, prompting government plans for CCTV in neonatal units. OpenAI's Sam Altman said people are right to be afraid of AI but should trust the industry to regulate itself, and at least 21 people died in Gaza when a war-damaged building collapsed. In the UK, complaints about water companies nearly doubled, leading the government to consider giving local leaders new oversight powers, and former police officer Paul Street was sentenced to four years in prison for misconduct. Ed Sheeran's support acts all quit his US tour after the rapper Macklemore was dropped for pro-Palestinian remarks.
A BBC investigation into shoplifting revealed more than 500,000 recorded offences in England last year, with a local report from the West focusing on retailers in Gloucester who described shoplifters as more prolific and brazen, saying it was a relentless, daily problem. Police in Suffolk released CCTV of Noah Woods and continued to appeal for volunteers to search, asking residents to check gardens, sheds and outbuildings.

Contested quote Gaza building collapse kills 20, dozens trapped
that this really shows why more heavy lifting equipment is urgently needed in Gaza. They're calling on Israel to allow more in. It restricts such machinery, it says, for security reasons to stop it from falling into the hands of Palestinian armed groups. And all of this, what's happened, it just highlights the ongoing dangers that there are in Gaza

Charged quote Ex-police sergeant Paul Street jailed for four years over toxic WhatsApp culture
He had been detained and strip-searched and the WhatsApp chats ordered by Street encouraged his colleagues to use violence against that boy, using the phrase, smash his little head in. Now, the judge in this case, Mark Loucroft Casey, said that Street's conduct amounted to bragging, a culture of bragging and intolerance.
