Sky News Today with Gareth Barlow

Hundreds of prisoners across England and Wales began being released early as part of the government’s early release scheme, which will see some inmates freed after serving a third of their sentence instead of half and more serious offenders at the halfway point instead of two-thirds. About 700 were expected to be freed today, with roughly 5,000 over the next year and further tranches over about 10 months, as the measure becomes a permanent part of the criminal justice system. Murder, manslaughter, rape and serious child sexual offences are exempt. Correspondents reported concerns from victims’ groups, probation inspectors and police about monitoring, timely tagging and capacity, while the government said it inherited a prison system on the brink of collapse and was rolling out tougher controls, including restriction zones, expanded electronic tagging and a say for victims in licence conditions. A Treasury minister told Sky News that 14,000 prison spaces would be added by 2031 but did not give a net figure when pressed.

The Israeli government described a mid-air confrontation in the cockpit of a flydubai passenger plane travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv as a jihadist terror attack. It said the co-pilot, an Omani national, stabbed the pilot and sent the jet plunging 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, with 170 people on board. Crew and passengers helped avert disaster, and the plane landed at Tabuk Regional Airport in Saudi Arabia. Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel's defence minister said passengers helped thwart an attempted terrorist attack, and Netanyahu greeted returning passengers in Tel Aviv.

BBC News reported that Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike was taken to hospital after surviving two lethal injections. The US Supreme Court had cleared the way for her to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years, but no time of death was announced and her condition was unclear. Witnesses described blinds being lowered and raised and said Pike was still breathing when the blinds went down a second time, leaving questions for the Department of Correction. A correspondent said Pentobarbital was used and that authorities had not explained why she remained alive after apparently receiving two doses. Pike, 50, had spent three decades on death row for murdering 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville in 1995; her lawyers had challenged the sentence, citing child abuse and other mitigating circumstances. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised passengers and crew on an Israel-bound flight forced to land in Saudi Arabia after one pilot stabbed the other and tried to crash the plane. The Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, with more than 170 passengers, plummeted 15,000 feet; a passenger and crew member overpowered the attacker, and two other pilots brought the plane under control. It was diverted to Tabuk and passengers later arrived in Tel Aviv, where Netanyahu met them. The stabbed pilot was identified as Indian national Smith Machar, while passenger Asaf Rajwan and fellow passenger Mouti Kona described the events. Aviation expert Dr Tony Stanton said the attack was incredibly rare and that the industry would need to learn from it, including on cockpit access, possible terrorism, and pilot mental health.

Newscast

The broadcast reported that Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were strong indications Iran played a part in the incident at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire over the weekend. He said the police investigation remained ongoing and complex, that he had chaired a COBRA meeting in Liverpool, and that the UK was working closely with the United States. He praised Gloucestershire police and counter-terrorism officers, and the programme noted five men had been released on bail.

New: Patrick Christys Tonight Late...

The broadcast first reported that five men arrested over a suspected plot involving RAF Fairford had been released on bail. Donald Trump said more information would emerge later and questioned the decision, saying he would not have released them; Andy Burnham said the men were subject to strict bail conditions and that the investigation was under close control. The Prime Minister said there were strong indications Iran played a part in the incident at the airbase, which has been used by US forces for operations in the Middle East, while Iran rejected any allegations.

The Prime Minister Andy Burnham said it was possible Labour's next manifesto could promise a new in-out referendum on the EU. In the discussion, Andrew Neil said Burnham wants Britain to rejoin and that the issue pleases his party and could support a progressive alliance, but he warned it could revive the debilitating Brexit period and derail other priorities. Chris Curtis said polling shows a wide consensus that Brexit has not worked and argued it would be naive to rule out options including rejoining, while Andrew Neil said the Europe the UK left is not the one it would rejoin, that negotiations would be difficult over Schengen, the euro, the budget and the rebate, and that a referendum and political consensus would likely be needed.

The Context

A pilot named as Schmidt Machar, an Indian national, was attacked during a mid-air incident on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was stabbed by another pilot who tried to crash the aircraft, and hailed him as a hero for opening the cockpit door despite being stabbed. A passenger and crew member restrained the suspect, who was arrested and questioned by Saudi authorities after the plane was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. The flight had declared a general emergency that changed to a hijacking emergency, and it descended more than 17,000 feet in under two minutes; two other pilots on board brought it under control. Passengers later arrived in Tel Aviv, and Netanyahu said he had instructed security services to prepare for additional potential threats. It was reported that Israel said the incident was an attack on the Abraham Accords with the UAE.

Channel 4 News

The broadcast began with a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv in which one pilot appeared to have stabbed another and it was claimed he intended to crash the plane. Passengers and crew overpowered the attacker, while off-duty pilots on board landed the aircraft in Saudi Arabia and the alleged attacker was arrested. Passengers later arrived in Tel Aviv, where Israeli politicians called it terrorism but authorities had not said what happened, and an aviation security expert discussed the insider threat from pilots. Andy Burnham then told Channel 4 News that Britain needed an honest conversation about its relationship with Europe, with rejoining the EU among options but nothing proposed at that moment. The prime minister also said there were strong indications Iran played a part in the incident near RAF Fairford, where five men were arrested and later released on bail, and MI5 warned academics about projects funded by a Chinese organisation with alleged intelligence ties.

ITV Evening News

Heroic passengers overpowered a pilot on a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv after he reportedly stabbed his co-pilot and the plane plunged 15,000 feet; an off-duty British pilot helped land it safely in Saudi Arabia, and Israel's prime minister said the suspect was arrested. Security analysis on the programme said evidence pointed to a terrorist incident and that Israeli officials believed it was a lone wolf, amid the coming anniversary of the 7 October attacks and elections. Household energy bills were forecast to rise by 16% in January, taking a typical dual-fuel bill to nearly £2,000, with the revised price cap due to increase bills from tomorrow; the programme also reported record diesel prices, higher mortgage rates and measures including removing VAT from electricity bills. MI5 issued a first-of-its-kind alert that UK-linked academics may have unknowingly worked on projects funded by Chinese intelligence, and the grooming gangs inquiry was expanded to Wales and Birmingham. Andy Burnham told ITV News that Brexit had harmed growth and that Britain should move closer to Europe, while he also said there were strong indications Iran played a part in the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford.
