The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Andre Agassi has explained why he returned to the tennis court for the Laver Cup, saying his early career was shaped by pressure rather than choice.

Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam champion, said tennis was never his choice as a child. He was sent away from home and winning was a must in his household. He was the youngest of four and described his father as very enthusiastic, adding that his father used to introduce him as a future world number one. Agassi said he played under a level of fear but later found joy in the sport long enough to turn it towards purpose.

Asked about Emma Raducanu, who has been reading his book and says she relates to his early success and the challenges that followed, Agassi gave careful advice. He said his first piece of advice was that if somebody gives you advice, don't listen to them, because you have to understand what they are really wrestling with. He encouraged her to focus on being the best of herself each day rather than judging that by results or expecting to be 100 per cent.

Asked about parenting, Agassi said parents should remember that it is not their life but their child's. He said exposing children to what matters to them can help, and that parents need to find out what their child's own way is.

Reflecting on his career, Agassi said his first Wimbledon title in 1992 still stands out. He said getting past the finish line for the first time is unforgettable and he never thought he would win there after coming close so many times. He praised Wimbledon for growing with the times without losing its tradition and familiarity. He said he saw no particular need to shake up the dress code or the all-white policy. Asked if he would bring back his hot lava tights, he said he would try to avoid putting people through that image again.
