An investigation by BBC Africa Eye has produced evidence suggesting that South African special forces were responsible for the killing of a police detective. Franz Matipa, a senior detective in Johannesburg, was found shot dead in his car on 6 August 2023. He had been investigating the disappearance of a suspected Islamic State group militant, Abdullah Abadiga.
Matipa's family described him as a devoted husband and father who had time for everyone in his neighbourhood. They said they no longer feel protected or safe. Matipa had suspected that South African Special Forces, an elite military unit, had kidnapped Abadiga from a shopping centre. He met the military, who agreed to hand over information about their activities.
Two days after that meeting, on 6 August 2023, Matipa went to a petrol station to meet someone he believed to be a whistleblower. No one showed up. Photographs obtained by the BBC show Matipa's car with a BMW following behind. A reliable source alleged that Matipa noticed he was being followed. Police later found the BMW 80 miles east of Johannesburg and linked it to the Special Forces. Tracking data recovered from the car placed it at the scene of the murder.
A former counter-terrorism police chief said Matipa was close to uncovering the truth behind Abadiga's disappearance. He revealed that Abadiga had been used as an intelligence asset, but his handlers underestimated him. "It became clear to me he went rogue," he said. Matipa is reported to have told a brigadier: "Is Abadiga going to kill me? I'm going to die."
Seven Special Forces soldiers and one other are due to stand trial in connection with Matipa's murder. Of those, seven are also accused, alongside four others, of abducting and murdering Abadiga. They deny all allegations. Matipa's family and former colleagues are demanding justice. One family member said: "Justice must be served. The persons that do it must take the consequences." Another said nothing would bring closure.
