The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Avon Valley Care Home in Kingswood, on the outskirts of Bristol, has opened an on-site pub for residents. The bar, called the Stag's Head, opened this morning and all drinks are free. It is the home's latest activity idea and is intended to give residents a place to socialise, listen to music and play darts.

The home already tries to take residents to a local social club once a month because some cannot get out as they used to or do not have family members who can take them out. When weather, transport and other arrangements allow, those trips include rolls, the jukebox and free pool. The team decided to bring the pub experience into the home instead.

Shelley, the events coordinator, said the pub had gone down well on its first day. She said the home is spread across three floors and activities are used to mix residents. The new bar gives them a chance to meet people they might not normally see day to day.

The opening is part of a wider trend of care homes providing pub-style spaces. Residents and staff marked the first day with a cheer and a first drink in the Stag's Head.

BBC ONE West treated the opening as a light feature, leading with the free drinks and the novelty of a pub inside a care home. It gave most space to the events coordinator explaining why the home brought the pub in, and linked it to social isolation and the home's three floors. The report also noted that such bars are becoming more common and ended with a celebratory cheers.
