The Full Story

The Comedy Wildlife Awards has announced its shortlist of 40 funny animal photographs and videos, chosen from around 10,000 entries submitted from 112 countries.

The contest was founded more than 10 years ago. Organisers say the comedy has a serious purpose: drawing people into wildlife conservation through images that make them smile.

Shortlisted images include:

  • A balletic bird and a startled fish.
  • A giraffe with a bushy back comb.
  • A toupee-wearing crocodile that looks like Elvis.
  • A seemingly saucy insect.
  • An angry small bird that does not look impressed.
  • Two owls photographed in the desert in the UAE, including one image described as an optical owl illusion.

The woman behind the owl illusion said she got to know the birds beforehand in the desert in the UAE. She spent time visiting them. On the occasion she captured the shot, both owls sat in the sunset. As she moved her car around, one looked at her while the other kept looking at the sunset. Another owl on the shortlist appears shocked to have got this far in the competition.

Organisers said the contest can engage people and help them understand how important it is to be in the wild. They added that a funny, engaging and positive conservation story can make a change. One contributor, Lynn, advised amateur photographers who enjoy a selfie to look at the bigger picture and take in what is around them, rather than just clicking the picture in front of them.

The winner will be announced in December. Meerkats are getting ready, and Doris the water buffalo already has her hat on as she hopes to scoop the top prize.
