The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

A cyclist who suffered a cardiac arrest during a long training ride has reunited with the air cadet who kept him alive with CPR.

Nigel Owen had been training for an Ironman competition when he suffered a catastrophic cardiac arrest on a pre-planned 70-mile bike ride. Sam, who was 16 at the time, was passing on his motorbike and stopped to help. He used first-aid skills learned at Air Cadets to carry out checks and then life-saving CPR.

Nigel was taken to hospital by air ambulance and later recovered. At the reunion, Sam, now 17, said the meeting was surreal. He said: 'The last time I saw you, you were basically, practically, basically dead, and now I'm with you, you seem really well, and it's just very, very weird, to be honest.'

Sam said that at the time he just got on with it and did what he could to help. He added that his mind was clear as day, but afterwards he thought about what happened during the ride home and whether he could have done anything differently.

Nigel told Sam: 'The whole chain of survival only worked because of what you did. You started the process, you kept me alive with your CPR.' He said he hoped Sam could see that his actions had made a huge difference. Nigel added that he is working full-time, can be with his family, his wife and his daughters, and gets to live his life again.

Nigel also praised Sam's presence of mind and bravery in stopping and getting involved. The reunion gave him a long overdue chance to thank the cadet who helped save his life.
