Darren Myles, 60, set to represent Great Britain at World Skate Games
Darren Myles, a 60-year-old skateboarder from Plymouth, has been selected to represent Great Britain in slalom skateboarding at the World Skate Games in Paraguay. It will be his first time competing for his country on an international stage.
Myles has skated for most of his life, but in his 50s began to struggle with some of his old tricks. He decided to pursue a new direction and took up slalom skateboarding, a form of downhill racing, in his late 50s. He described the early days as an "eye-opener", saying the steep hills and the speed of other riders were intimidating at first, but everyone was friendly and offered help and advice.
He will now take on the best in the world in a setting very different from his usual training ground in Plymouth. Myles says he is proud to represent Britain in a sport he never thought he would compete in, and notes that skateboarding has become more respectable since his younger days.
Speaking about his achievement, he said: "I've learned that life carries on after 60 just keep at it, keep learning, I think it's amazing what you can do at any age really."
The World Skate Games take place in October, where Myles will aim to show that it is never too late to become an international athlete.
