Dolly Parton dies at 80
Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her nephew confirmed on Instagram. The singer, songwriter and actress had been in declining health and was forced to cancel a planned Las Vegas residency in September.
Born in poverty in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, in 1946, Parton was one of twelve children and grew up in a one-room cabin. She wrote her first songs as a child and moved to Nashville after high school. There she performed on the Porter Wagoner Show, forming a long partnership and recording albums with him before branching out as a solo artist.
Her career brought major hits, including Jolene, I Will Always Love You and the theme to the film 9 to 5. She also appeared in that movie alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Parton retained control of her own music, and refused to sell Elvis Presley the rights to I Will Always Love You, a decision that earned her millions later when Whitney Houston recorded it.
Known for rhinestones and sharp humour, she was also a serious businesswoman. She founded Dollywood, the theme park, and created an Imagination Library that sent free books to children. During the pandemic she donated a million dollars to help fund the Moderna vaccine research. She had been married to Carl Dean for 59 years, and had no children.
The cause of death was not immediately given. Tributes have been led by fans and fellow musicians, all hailing her as a once-in-a-generation talent and an international icon.
