The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Former MI6 chief John Sawers has said there is a chance of a peace deal with Iran at some point, but he warned it would not be very satisfactory. In an interview, he said the US-Israeli military action against Iran has created a harder line, more hostile and more repressive Iranian regime. He said the previous Iranian government had been awful, and the current one is even worse.

Sawers said the US attack on Tehran has shown the Iranian regime that it has more power than it may have thought, especially through its ability to control oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. He also pointed to the power of the Houthis in Yemen to disrupt traffic in the Red Sea and the strait.

He suggested fighting could surge in November and December. After that, he said, the Americans could say they have done what they can and walk away. He argued that it is not sustainable for the US military to keep such a large naval force in the area escorting a relatively small number of vessels through the strait. It is also not sustainable for Iran to have all its ports blockaded, he said.

Both sides are worse off in some ways, Sawers said. But he drew a distinction between their motives: the Iranian regime is fighting for its existence, while the Americans seem to be fighting for cheaper diesel and oil prices. He said it is clear which side has more at stake.

The interview also touched on Russian interference, which he linked to a long tradition dating back to the Cold War, and on the threat from AI to security. The Iran remarks were the main focus of the political discussion.
