The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.
Matthew Wright, the former chief executive of Southern Water, appeared at Bromley Magistrates Court alongside three other former employees, facing charges of conspiracy to defraud regulators. The case is the first criminal prosecution of its kind brought by the Environment Agency.
The charges relate to an alleged scheme to manipulate water quality tests between 2012 and 2017, in order to avoid paying an estimated £45 million in penalties. Wright, along with Philip Barker, Clive Massey and Mark Gregory, is accused of conspiring to defraud the Environment Agency and the water regulator.
All four were granted bail, and the case was sent to the Crown Court. Wright's legal team has previously denied any wrongdoing, and he is said to be keen to clear his name.
In a separate set of proceedings, Southern Water itself has been charged with dozens of offences for failing to comply with environmental permits. Three further individuals, Terry Stevens, David James and Mark Butler, have also been charged in connection with those offences. They appeared in court to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses, and were granted bail.
A hearing is scheduled at Maidstone Crown Court next month.
