The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story. Facts only one channel reported are attributed to it.
Harry Kane has won the 2026 men's Ballon d'Or, becoming the first English player to take the award in 25 years. The Bayern Munich striker, 33, was announced as the winner at a ceremony in London. He finished ahead of Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe. The award is voted on by one journalist from each of the top-ranked FIFA nations and honours the best male player of the season.
Kane scored 73 goals for club and country in the 2025-26 season. That included 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern, a club record, as they won the German domestic double. He also reached the Champions League semi-finals and scored 12 goals in 14 England matches, six of them at the World Cup, where England finished third. His total of 73 was the second highest by a player in Europe's top five leagues, behind Lionel Messi's record.
At the ceremony, Kane also received the Best Striker award. In his acceptance speech he said he was almost speechless and that being in London made the win extra special. He thanked teammates, coaches, family, his wife Katie and their four children, and former club Tottenham. He said: 'For any young boy or girl wanting to achieve their dreams, anything is possible with hard work, when no-one else is watching.'
Kane's career began at Tottenham's academy. He had loan spells at Leyton Orient, Leicester and Millwall before breaking into the Spurs team under Tim Sherwood. He scored 280 goals for Tottenham before joining Bayern Munich in 2023. Prince William called him a remarkable player, and England manager Thomas Tuchel said the team were lucky to have him as captain. Wembley's arch was lit gold and Bayern Munich's stadium displayed his name.
Other winners included Spain's Alexia Putellas, who won the women's Ballon d'Or for a record-equalling third time. Barcelona's Lamine Yamal won the Men's Young Talent award for the third time, and England's Bukayo Saka won the Socrates Award for humanitarian work.
The ceremony was not without problems. The official Ballon d'Or website published an article prematurely announcing Kane as the winner before the event began. The ceremony started 45 minutes late, and there were reports of fans breaking security fences outside the London Palladium and clashing with security and police. Traffic delays were caused by the pedestrianisation of nearby Oxford Street. Kane later travelled to Munich and returned to training with Bayern.
Only five Englishmen have won the Ballon d'Or. Michael Owen was the last in 2001, and Stanley Matthews was the first 70 years ago. Kane's win has prompted calls for him to receive a knighthood, while his boyhood club Ridgeway Rovers is planning a tribute.

Channel Perspectives
What each channel focused on, with key quotes.
BBC News treated the win as a straight sports news item, leading with the result, the voting system and the other award winners. Its later bulletins added Kane's emotional reaction to being presented the trophy by Ronaldo, but did not cover the ceremony's organisational problems.
- “We have a winner in the 2026 Ballon d'Or race, and it is England captain Harry Kane.”
- “Kane scored 73 goals across the 2025-26 season”
- “Ronaldo was one of my idols growing up so for him to be the one to present me with the award”
Sky News gave the win a short breaking sports slot at the top of its morning programme, noting the 25-year gap since Michael Owen and Kane's 73 goals. It then moved quickly to the Israeli elections and other domestic news, with no detail on the ceremony or other award winners.
- “We start with some sports news, breaking overnight that Harry Kane has become the first England player since Michael Owen 25 years ago to win the Ballon d'Or”
- “He had a remarkable season, he scored 73 goals for England and Bayern Munich”
- “Being here in London as well has made it extra special and looked like a good omen for me tonight.”
Channel 4's summary was brief and factual, covering the win, Kane's age, the runners-up and his reaction in a single round-up. It did not give goal statistics or mention the other award categories.
- “Harry Kane has won the prestigious Ballon d'Or, as he was crowned the world's best footballer at a ceremony in London.”
- “The 33-year-old striker is the first Englishman to win the award for 25 years”
- “Kane said he was almost speechless at his win, and being at the ceremony in London made it extra special.”
5 combined a short lunchtime news item with a longer evening feature that traced Kane's career from loans to Bayern and included fan and former coach reaction. It put more weight on the personal story and on reaction from Prince William and former England striker Emile Heskey than on the ceremony itself.
- “After 73 goals for club and country last season, Harry Kane has won the Ballon d'Or.”
- “He is the first Englishman to win the prestigious trophy in 25 years, and the fifth to win it overall.”
- “I think it's massive for England, for our country. Being here in London was a good omen for me, and it's been too long.”
BBC One West's bulletins gave the fullest treatment, with a correspondent package, reaction from Prince William and Thomas Tuchel, and details of tributes at Wembley and Bayern. It was also the only output to report the ceremony's problems, including the premature website article, late start, security breaches and traffic delays.
- “Prince William congratulated the England captain for being a remarkable player who has given fans so many unforgettable moments.”
- “Hours before the ceremony had even begun, someone was trigger-happy and on the official Ballon d'Or website, there was an article published mistakenly, prematurely announcing that Harry Kane had won the men's award.”
- “Only five Englishmen have won the Ballon d'Or. The last was Michael Owen in 2001, prompting calls for Kane to receive a knighthood.”
ITV1 focused on Kane's rise and the message that hard work can overcome early setbacks, using Tim Sherwood to underline the value of giving young players a chance. Its bulletins also noted the London ceremony's tribute to Stanley Matthews and Kane's return to Bayern training the next day.
- “For any young boy or girl wanting to achieve their dreams, anything is possible with hard work, when no-one else is watching”
- “I think too many clubs now are not giving the kids the opportunity.”
- “It was the first time the event was held in London instead of France, a tribute to the award's first-ever winner, England's Stanley Matthews, who won 70 years ago.”
