The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Independent MP Helen Haines is in a critical but stable condition in hospital in Melbourne after she was struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday afternoon. Her husband, Phil Haines, said both of her legs have been amputated. She lost her left leg on Monday and surgeons later had to remove her right leg. He said she is alive and stable, and that her heart and mind are in good shape, but warned her recovery will be long and difficult.

The 65-year-old mother of three, who has represented the federal seat of Indi since 2019, was taking items from the boot of her car when she was hit by a white Toyota Land Cruiser. The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said the incident was not an accident and appeared to be a deliberate act. Police have described the attack as targeted and isolated, and say they do not have intelligence of any ongoing threat to the public. The federal police, Victoria Police and ASIO are working together, and the joint counter-terrorism team has been activated. Police have not established a motive.

According to accounts given by ministers and police, the suspect allegedly hit Ms Haines, did a U-turn and struck her again, leaving her pinned between two vehicles. A knife was found in the car. A local barber, Ricky Jeffries, ran to help, took the knife from the suspect and held him until police arrived. Other bystanders also came to her aid. The vehicle remained part of an active crime scene in the centre of Wangaratta.

The suspect was named as 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, a local man and environmental activist from a small village outside Wangaratta. His family said they had been friends with Ms Haines for more than 20 years and described what happened as devastating and unfathomable. Reports said he had complained of chronic pain and being broke, and that he had an activist background on climate, forestry and Gaza. Police said they had no intelligence holdings against him before the incident.

Mr Nugent has been charged with dangerous driving, intentionally causing serious injury and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. He also faced a cannabis charge after police searched his home, and police have not ruled out further charges, including attempted murder. He appeared briefly in court, where his lawyer raised mental health concerns and said he had a neurological condition and concussion. He did not enter a plea, did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody. His next appearance is expected in February.

The attack has prompted vigils and floral tributes in Wangaratta, a rural community about three hours from Melbourne. Politicians from across the spectrum expressed shock and praised Ms Haines, a former midwife and anti-corruption campaigner. Fellow independent MP Zali Steggall described her as the best of us. The King's representative in Australia said King Charles had been kept up to date. The case has also intensified debate about threats to politicians, political rhetoric, online hate and security for MPs, especially women. Victoria is due to hold state elections next month.

Channel Perspectives

What each channel focused on, with key quotes.

Sky News treated the story as a rolling breaking news event, with live updates from Melbourne and frequent changes to the casualty picture. It moved quickly from the arrest and knife detail to the suspect's name, his family's friendship with Haines and the political rhetoric debate. It gave strong play to the moment both legs were amputated and to the Prime Minister's claim that Haines was hit, then struck again after a U-turn.

Key Quotes:
  • “Police have said that Helen Haines was taken to hospital with critical injuries after being hit by the car”
  • “the surgeons had to also remove her right leg”
  • “The suspect has also been named Brendan Nugent now”

Channel 4's summaries were tight and factual, concentrating on the legal and security architecture around the case. It highlighted the Prime Minister's description of a deliberate act, the activation of the joint counter-terrorism team and the charge laid against the driver. Later bulletins led on the amputation of both legs and the husband's statement.

Key Quotes:
  • “Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese claimed it was not an accident and said it appeared to have been a deliberate act.”
  • “The joint counter-terrorism team has been activated but the motive is not known.”
  • “has said that both of her legs have been amputated”

BBC One West built its coverage around correspondent reports from Wangaratta and the court, with the community reaction and the suspect's charges given substantial space. It tracked the medical updates from one leg to both legs and later focused on the accused's mental health, the possibility of attempted murder charges and the wider political atmosphere. It also brought in the King's representative and the question of security for MPs.

Key Quotes:
  • “has been flown to Melbourne and we believe she's undergoing surgery at the moment”
  • “the surgeons had to also remove her right leg”
  • “Police say they haven't ruled out further charges against Brendan Nugent”

5 News leaned into the dramatic sequence of events and the human detail, especially the local barber who detained the suspect and the fact that Haines was hit twice. It also followed the medical updates closely and reported the court appearance, bail position and police caution that motive was still unclear. Its tone was direct and vivid but still stuck to official police and family statements.

Key Quotes:
  • “An Australian MP has had a leg amputated after a man allegedly drove into her and reversed to hit her a second time.”
  • “I don't think I'm a hero. I think that I just was a person who had an opportunity to intervene in a safe-ish sort of way.”
  • “the surgeons had to also remove her right leg”

BBC News concentrated on the court process and the legal jeopardy facing the suspect. It reported the brief hearing, the lawyer's comments about mental health and concussion, and the additional cannabis charge. It also made clear that police had not ruled out attempted murder charges while Haines remained in a critical but stable condition.

Key Quotes:
  • “Miss Haines remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital, having reportedly had a leg amputated.”
  • “His lawyer did talk about his client's mental health concerns, saying that he also has a neurological condition and that he is suffering from concussion.”
  • “not ruling out any further charges, including an attempted murder of Helen Haines”

ITV

ITV1 put the family friend angle near the centre of its reporting, alongside the barber's intervention and the charge faced by the suspect. It gave a clear sequence of the alleged attack and later led on the confirmation that both legs had been amputated. Its reports also drew on the Governor General's call for a more decent political debate.

Key Quotes:
  • “Police believe Helen Haines was hit in a targeted incident.”
  • “an MP Struck by a car in an alleged attack has now had both her legs amputated”
  • “He extended his sympathies to the Haines family who he said he had known for 20 years.”
