The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.
Human remains found in scrubland after a wildfire in west London have been identified as Joanne Sheen, a mother of three who went missing nearly seven years ago. The discovery was confirmed by police after a post-mortem and a lengthy investigation.
The remains were found in early August, shortly after firefighters tackled a blaze on a couple of hectares of scrubland near Bedfont Lakes Country Park in Feltham. A member of the public came across the bones a week later and alerted police. An initial post-mortem suggested the remains were those of a young woman aged between 25 and 45, but it was only later that forensic work confirmed they belonged to Sheen, who was 44 when she disappeared.
Sheen was last seen in December 2019, travelling from Fareham to Southampton with a friend. Her family reported her missing in early 2020, prompting a major police operation. Officers pursued thousands of lines of inquiry, took more than 300 statements, and searched the Solent because the last sighting placed her on the way to Southampton.
The case has now moved to a new stage with the arrest of a 56-year-old man, who remains in police custody. Police have also offered a reward through Crimestoppers for anyone with further information about her disappearance.
