The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Labour has held Holborn and St Pancras in a by-election triggered by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer's resignation as an MP. The party's candidate, Camden Council leader Sagal Abdiwali, won 12,292 votes, 45% of the total. Green Party leader Zack Polanski came second with 8,928 votes, 33%. Labour's majority was 3,364.

The Conservatives came third with 1,922 votes. Reform UK was fourth, the Liberal Democrats fifth, and other candidates included the Workers Party and Restore Britain. Labour's vote share fell compared with the 2024 general election, while the Greens increased their share substantially. Analysis suggested much of the Green increase came from a pro-Palestinian independent vote rather than directly from Labour, and Labour's position improved after Andy Burnham replaced Keir Starmer as Prime Minister.

Abdiwali, who arrived in the UK as a refugee from Somalia as a child and grew up in Camden, said the campaign had offered hope rather than fear. She said she would press the government on tackling rough sleeping, bringing Thames Water into public ownership and improving opportunities for young people. She said Andy Burnham's recent visit to a local homelessness charity showed Labour was serious about the issue.

The by-election was widely seen as an early test for Burnham's premiership and for Polanski's leadership of the Greens. Labour sources said they were confident of victory, while Green figures played down expectations as polls closed. A Green statement said the party had run a positive campaign and that being the main challenger showed how far it had come. One insider said losing by no more than about 5,000 votes would count as some kind of success.

Polanski said he would stay on as leader. He said the Greens had more than tripled their vote share, although he wanted to win, and that voters had told him they wanted to give Burnham a chance. He pointed to Green policies on rent controls, the climate crisis and nationalising Thames Water. He said the party had grown to around 220,000 members and that no one would be excluded on the basis of faith or religion.

The result was overshadowed by a row over a motion passed at the Green Party conference. The motion declared Zionism a form of racism and called for a single democratic Palestinian state in all historic Palestine, which critics said implied the end of Israel. Polanski did not attend the vote because he was campaigning. He repeatedly declined interview requests about it during the campaign. After the result, he said he would have voted against the unamended motion but would have supported it as amended. He said he grew up in a Zionist household but had changed his views, and that the displacement of Palestinians and the genocide were clearly racist. He also said criticism of Israel should not be conflated with antisemitism.

The motion was condemned by Jewish groups, other parties and the Prime Minister. Andy Burnham called it completely wrong and a terrible judgment, saying it effectively ruled out a two-state solution, and called on the Greens to reverse it. The Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council criticised the party, and some sister Green parties in Europe also objected. Within the Greens, former leader Caroline Lucas apologised to the Jewish community and said Polanski should have attended and voted. Former co-leaders Jonathan Bartley and Ellie Chowns criticised his leadership, and the chair of Jewish Greens, Vivian Lichtenstein, called on him to resign. Other Green figures said he retained support among much of the membership.

Polanski said he could carry on as leader and that the party was democratic and member-led. He denied losing control of the party. But the result and the conference row have left him facing questions about his position, with a leadership election due next summer. For Labour, the win was a relief after local election losses in May and a previous by-election defeat to the Greens in Gorton and Denton. Supporters said it showed Labour could see off the Green challenge on its left, as well as Reform UK on its right.

Channel Perspectives

What each channel focused on, with key quotes.

ITV

ITV led on the campaign and Polanski's refusal to answer questions about the Zionism motion, then framed the result as a comfortable Labour hold and a failed gamble for Polanski. Its lunchtime bulletin stressed internal Green criticism and the possibility of a leadership challenge.

Key Quotes:
  • “Mr Polanski, is Zionism racism?”
  • “Zack Polanski's decision to stand in this by-election was a gamble and it has backfired.”
  • “This was in the end quite a comfortable victory for Labour and what has always been a safe seat for them.”

Sky gave rolling count coverage and detailed number-crunching, treating the contest as a test of Burnham's new premiership and Polanski's leadership. It highlighted Green expectation management, the conference row and analysis suggesting Green gains did not come directly from Labour.

Key Quotes:
  • “Labour are favourites to hold this seat, their candidate is Sagal Abdiwali, the leader of Camden Council.”
  • “The Green Party are saying in a statement, whatever the result later, we have run a positive campaign full of energy in what is one of Labour's safest seats.”
  • “Are you gonna continue as leaders? Yes, absolutely. That's what leaders do”

BBC ONE West bulletins focused on the official declaration, the scale of Labour's hold and the growing pressure on Polanski, including the Jewish Greens chair's call for him to resign. Its evening report framed the ongoing story around whether Polanski can glue his party back together.

Key Quotes:
  • “I hereby declare the Sehgal Abduwali has been duly elected as a member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras”
  • “Tonight though the focus remains on Zack Polanski He is trying and currently struggling to glue his party back together”
  • “He either needs to apologize and Say and agree that and acknowledge that what he did was inaccurate Or, you know, not the way not what what he should have done or resign”

Newsnight treated the result as a symbolic test for Andy Burnham and a moment of reckoning for the Greens, with a studio panel and a former Green leader apologising for the Zionism motion. It dwelt on internal Green divisions and whether Polanski should have attended the conference vote.

Key Quotes:
  • “The counting is about to get underway in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, triggered by ex-PM Keir Starmer standing down as an MP.”
  • “I did my very best to stop the motion going through. I spoke against it, I voted against it. Unfortunately, it did still go through.”
  • “Yes, I do think that was a mistake.”

GB News framed the by-election as a national political turning point, with strong anti-Green commentary and voter interviews. It emphasised a crisis inside the Greens, the prospect of an early general election and the pressure on Polanski to resign.

Key Quotes:
  • “If Labour wins, it may make a general election sooner rather than later, more likely. If the Greens lose, what on earth happened to their leader, Zack Polanski?”
  • “There's an absolute crisis I think within that party.”
  • “I'm Jewish and we are very fearful as Jews living in this country right now.”

BBC News gave the fullest results reporting and analysis, including John Curtice and Sam Coates, and repeatedly returned to the Zionism row and Polanski's leadership. It balanced the Labour win with questions about Labour's lower vote share and the Greens' internal split.

Key Quotes:
  • “The Labour Party has seen off a fight from the Greens in a by-election for the parliamentary seat previously held by the former Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.”
  • “Of course I can carry on as leader of the Green Party.”
  • “I grew up in a Zionist household and I grew up with the idea that that region was a land without a people and a people without a land.”

Channel 4's summary was concise, leading on the declaration and Burnham's congratulations, then noting Polanski's vow to stay on. It gave little space to the internal Green row beyond a short mention.

Key Quotes:
  • “Sagal Abduwali has been duly elected as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras.”
  • “The Prime Minister Andy Burnham offered his congratulations saying Holborn and St Pancras voted for Hope and he said he was looking forward to working with Labour's newest MP.”
  • “Zack Polanski vowed to carry on despite failing to win the seat.”

5 News focused on whether the result marks the beginning of the end for Polanski, leading with calls for his resignation and the party split. It included voter interviews and highlighted that he tripled the Green vote share but still faced renewed criticism.

Key Quotes:
  • “Labour has won the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, beating Green Party leader Zack Polanski.”
  • “Do you think it's right that he continues as leader of the party? No, I think he should resign.”
  • “He actually tripled the Greens' share of the vote. But with the by-election over, today he is facing renewed calls to resign over the party's new policy on Israel.”
