Major Israeli military operation in West Bank after deadly clashes

Israel has launched a major military operation in the occupied West Bank following clashes that left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead. The violence erupted in a village south of Nablus, where Palestinian residents say about 30 Israeli settlers attacked their homes. Israeli officials, however, claim that Palestinians attacked a group of Israeli hikers who were on an unauthorised walk through the area.

Footage from the scene shows Palestinians wrestling with Israeli forces. In one incident, a Palestinian man snatched a rifle from an Israeli security guard and fatally shot him, along with an Israeli soldier. The attacker was later shot dead, along with three other Palestinians. At a hospital in Nablus, Palestinians described a familiar pattern: settlers invading their village to claim land, then calling in Israeli soldiers for support. Israeli forces later arrived at the hospital and took one of the injured men away.

In response, Israel's prime minister said he was reinforcing military units across the West Bank and accelerating the legalisation of unauthorised farm outposts, which human rights groups say are used to drive Palestinians off their land. Large crowds of settlers later attacked the Palestinian town of Sarah and several other locations. One of the Israelis killed, Ben Yahu Mellet, was buried as tensions remained high.

The violence has deepened the divide. Many Israelis see the attack as proof of the threat they face from Palestinians. Many Palestinians see it as further evidence that Israeli lives are valued far more than their own. The situation remains volatile, with the risk of further escalation.
