Police in Ireland have arrested a man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s after an arson attack in Waterford killed four members of the same family and left two other children in a critical condition.
The fire broke out at a two-storey house on Birch Avenue in the Birchwood area of Waterford City in the early hours of Tuesday. Fire services were called at about 5.13am. When units arrived, the fire was already fully developed and took considerable effort to extinguish. Gardaí entered the property and found a traumatic scene.
Six people were in the house. Four died: Philip and Kim English, who were married, and two of their sons, Callum and Jayden. Two other children were taken to a children's hospital in Dublin because their injuries were too serious to be treated locally. They remain in a critical condition.
Gardaí have launched a murder investigation. They believe the house was attacked by a person or persons unknown and that the fire was started deliberately. Detectives are investigating whether an accelerant was used and whether a device was thrown at the house. The house has been declared a crime scene and is being examined by the Garda Technical Bureau.
The Waterford Coroner's Office and the State Pathologist have been notified. The remains of the deceased have been removed from the scene. Postmortems are to be carried out at University Hospital Waterford by Professor Linda Mulligan, Chief State Pathologist, and Dr Sally Ann Collis, State Pathologist.
The investigation is being coordinated from an incident room at Waterford Garda Station under a senior investigating officer. It is being run by the Serious Crime Unit of Waterford Garda Station, supported by Divisional Resources, the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and other resources. Family liaison officers have been appointed.
In the days after the attack, tributes were paid to the family. The head teacher of the two boys who died said they lit up the school. One of the boys was a keen footballer and his team said it was devastated. A community hub has been set up to support local people.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said his thoughts and prayers were with anyone who had lost their lives and all who were affected. He also thought of the first responders and asked that they and the Gardaí be given space to deal with a worrying and deeply disturbing situation. Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan said he was fully confident that whoever was responsible for the multiple murders would be brought to justice.
Police have searched properties and seized vehicles and electronic devices. They have appealed for witnesses who were in the Waterford City area between 4.30am and 5.30am on Tuesday to come forward. The man and woman arrested in connection with the arson and murder investigation remain in custody for questioning.
