The Pet Shop Boys have released a revised version of their musical biography about Alan Turing, now dedicated to the pioneering computer scientist and codebreaker. The work, titled A Man From The Future, was first performed at the Proms 12 years ago and has been updated to reflect its place in the history of artificial intelligence.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, the duo behind the band, visited Bletchley Park, where Turing worked during the Second World War. They described the experience as emotional and authentic. 'It smells like the 1940s,' said Tennant.
The biography traces Turing's life from his school days to his death by suicide in 1954, after he was convicted for homosexuality. The band said they were struck by the injustice of his treatment. 'Thousands and thousands of lives were ruined,' they said.
To ensure accuracy, they collaborated with mathematician and biographer Andrew Hodges, author of the definitive Turing biography. Hodges recalled receiving an email from the band while on a beach in France. 'I was starstruck, of course, but obviously we got onto a real collaboration.'
The revised work also draws parallels between Turing's world and modern AI. The band noted that Turing, who struggled to tell a lie, gave us a technology that generates fake news. 'The whole problem about AI is not that it's just so clever, which it is, but that it's interfering in everything.'
The piece will be premiered on BBC Radio. The band said they made it for Alan.
