The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.
Romell Glave won the European 100m title in Birmingham on Saturday, taking gold in his home stadium ahead of British teammate Jeremiah Azu. The result gave the host nation a memorable one-two in the men's sprint, with Glave improving on the bronze he won two years ago.
Speaking after the race, Glave said the victory felt like a reward for hard work. "It's an amazing feeling. I'm standing here as European champion, not as a participant, not as a finalist, but European champion," he said. "It wasn't really given to me. I had to earn it and through my training, through my hard work, I'm here standing as the best in Europe."
Glave, who grew up watching Usain Bolt, said he tries to copy the Jamaican's relaxed approach before races. "I watched him at the Olympics in 2008," he said. "He seemed so relaxed before each race. Other guys were in the zone and very fierce and angry, but he always seemed so laid back. I tried to make that a part of my identity."
The 24-year-old also spoke about the dynamic with his teammate and friend Azu. "I try to have a bit of fun, a bit of banter. Just enjoy that moment because we don't really get it back," he said. "But just stay in the zone and enjoy each moment with each other. That just helps us to run with more freedom, with more joy."
Looking ahead, Glave has his sights set on next year's World Championships and the 2028 Olympics. "I would say just being more consistent as I showed this year," he said. "I was very consistent and to be able to get European champion, it showed that I can aim for the highest and go for the world champs and also lean up to the Olympics."
The event was the first time the UK has hosted the European Championships, though there were complaints about ticket prices and empty seats. Glave said the crowd did not affect him during the race. "I wasn't really too paying attention to the crowd until after the race," he said. "There's a lot of crowd, a lot of audience that came to greet me and taking a little selfie, but it was a very enjoyable moment because being at home, it showed that there's people that is going to come out and support you."
