The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Rescuers in Busan, South Korea, are preparing another attempt to free a shark that has been trapped in a canal for two weeks. The shark is three and a half metres long and has been nicknamed Boogangi, with one report also calling it Bukangi. It has become an unlikely local celebrity in the port city, drawing more than 600,000 visitors.

An earlier attempt to guide the animal back to sea using water jets failed when it simply swam away. The next effort will use nets to gently steer the shark towards open water. The attempt is due today.

Experts say the shark appears healthy. They warn, however, that it could deteriorate if it remains trapped for very much longer. The rescue effort is focused on moving the animal to open water without harming it.

Channel Perspectives

What each channel focused on, with key quotes.

The BBC covered the story as a short, colourful rescue item within a wider news bulletin. It gave equal weight to the rescue plan and the shark's status as a local attraction, with a calm and factual tone and no discussion of the shark's species, public safety, or why it entered the canal. Across two bulletins, the wording was almost identical, though the nickname appeared once as Boogangi and once as Bukangi.
