The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Rescues and disruption

Storm Adam has killed two women and forced hundreds of people to leave their homes in eastern Spain after widespread flooding, with Valencia and Alicante on the eastern coast and the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Formentera among the worst affected areas.

In the Valencia region, fields and roads were left submerged and streets were turned into rivers. Helicopter rescues were used to reach people trapped in the worst-hit areas. One family was airlifted from their home as the water rose, while emergency teams used a paddleboard to bring a 93-year-old woman named Teresa to safety. Many of the most vulnerable were taken to a centre where relatives spoke of their ordeal. One woman said her mother had no clothes and was soaked; another said her parents were nervous but could not be reached, with no electricity and everything flooded. Cars were left submerged in Valencia as the floods took hold.

Balearic Islands and airport closure

The Balearic Islands also counted the cost. Flooded garages had to be pumped out and extra emergency vehicles were sent. Ibiza airport had to close after terminal buildings were flooded. The flooding follows extreme summer heat, leaving Spain to deal with the aftermath of another bout of severe weather.

Warnings and forecast

Forecasters said the country was not out of danger. Widespread extreme weather warnings remained in place along the southern coast of Valencia and surrounding areas, where more than 90 millimetres of rain fell in one hour and 200 to 300 millimetres fell in 12 hours. That is about three times the rain those regions would normally see in a whole month, in just one day. Storm Adam was expected to move away from the mainland towards coastal areas in the far northeast of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, where locally very heavy showers were possible in the first half of the day. Rainfall totals of 300 to 400 millimetres were not out of the question, with higher amounts possible in particularly affected areas.

The stormy weather was then expected to move across Europe through France and Italy. In the UK, forecasters issued weather warnings for Friday, though the weather was not expected to be as intense as in Spain.
