Ralph Seed, 18, had complex regional pain syndrome, a condition that made even the lightest touch agonising. The pain in his left foot was so severe that last year he considered having the foot amputated.
Two weeks ago, Ralph underwent surgery to install a spinal implant designed to disrupt the electrical signals causing the pain. The device reacts in real time to his movements and adjusts the level of stimulation accordingly. Dr Sachin Rastogi, who suggested the trial, said the implant provides a precise amount of stimulation that is much more appropriate for a young person.
Ralph described the change as unbelievable. 'From 10 out of 10 pain every day, every second for four years to now, no pain is unbelievable,' he said. 'It feels like a whole new world compared to what it was before, it really does. I was limited by so much and now starting to try to rebuild, I have everything going for us now.'
His recovery will not be instant. He will need rehabilitation before he can stop using crutches. But without the constant pain, his life is being transformed step by step.
