The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.
Israel has marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7 attacks with a national day of remembrance, while pro-Palestinian protests took place in London and debates over antisemitism and Zionism continued in Britain.
Commemorations began with a nationwide minute of silence at 6.29am, the time the attacks started in 2023. Ceremonies were held at Kibbutz Kfar Aza, the Nova music festival site in Re'im, and in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. At the Nova site, where more than 360 people were killed and dozens taken hostage, families laid flowers and candles beside memorials bearing the names and photographs of victims.
Israel's Ministry of Heritage says 1,145 people were killed on October 7, including 779 civilians and 366 military and security personnel. Other reports put the death toll at around 1,200. Hamas and other groups took 251 hostages. Only 168 returned alive through rescues and deals, and this is the first anniversary since all remaining hostages were released or their remains returned.
Families described the day as an open wound. One Israeli, Efrat Machikawa, said six relatives were kidnapped, five were later released and one, Efrat Katz, was killed. Her uncle, Gadi Moses, returned after 482 days. Another family member, Adam Ma'anit, said his cousin Tsachi Idan was taken hostage and died in captivity, with his body returned under a ceasefire deal. He said the family had failed to bring him home alive.
In Gaza, Israel launched a military offensive after the attacks. The Gaza Health Ministry says more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed, most of them civilians, and the United Nations considers those figures reliable. Much of Gaza lies in ruins, with hundreds of thousands of people displaced and a humanitarian crisis continuing. A US-brokered ceasefire has been in effect since October 10 last year, but reports say Israel has killed more than 1,400 Palestinians since then, including at least two since dawn on the anniversary. Plans for Israeli withdrawal, Hamas disarmament and reconstruction are stalled.
Israel is due to hold a general election within three weeks, and the security failure of October 7 is a central issue. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied responsibility for the attacks and rejected reports that he was warned about Hamas plans, including by the UAE president. He has refused calls for a state commission of inquiry, saying the judiciary would be biased against him. Protesters have asked Israel's highest court to force his hand. Polls suggest a close race, with opposition figures including former IDF commander Gadi Eisenkot neck and neck with Netanyahu.
In London, up to 10,000 people marched through the centre of the city. The Metropolitan Police said around 20 arrests were made, and some people climbed on top of the Battle of Britain memorial. Counter-protesters gathered alongside the march, some carrying Israeli and British flags. Five people were arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred outside the Board of Deputies of British Jews. A student coalition said it chose the anniversary to highlight what it calls three years of genocide. Police had imposed conditions on the march, including route restrictions and a ban on protesters covering their faces. Earlier, police said two pro-Palestinian demonstrators were arrested during a student-led march.
The anniversary also reignited arguments in Britain over antisemitism and Zionism. The Green Party passed a motion defining Zionism as racist by 1,022 votes to 813, prompting Israel to accuse the party of giving legitimacy to terrorism. The UK prime minister, Andy Burnham, said an attack on Jewish people in Britain is an attack on all of us and that antisemitism has no place in the country. Jewish community figures reported harassment and abuse, and some said not enough was being done to protect them.

Channel Perspectives
What each channel focused on, with key quotes.
GB News framed the anniversary around British domestic politics and antisemitism, giving heavy weight to the Green Party's Zionism motion and to claims that anti-Israel sentiment is rising on the left. Its coverage also questioned whether protests on October 7 were appropriate and highlighted fears within the Jewish community about emigration and safety.
- “Green Party members have passed a motion to define Zionism as racist at the party's conference in Brighton.”
- “Well today they were out in London in relatively small numbers and GBD's Will Godley went to ask them some questions.”
- “There are people that are moving away from the unfortunate events that are happening more and more here.”
Sky News gave rolling coverage to the Israeli remembrance day, with live scenes from Jerusalem and the Nova festival site and a detailed report from Sderot. It focused on how October 7 reshaped Israeli security thinking and on the political mood before the election.
- “Israel is holding a national remembrance day for the October 7th attacks by Hamas.”
- “Around 50 people were killed in Sderot when it was attacked by Hamas.”
- “364 of them were killed when Hamas fighters streamed Over the border”
BBC NEWS combined live memorial coverage with survivor testimony and a wide account of the war's toll. It repeatedly cited Israeli and Gaza health figures and placed the anniversary in the context of hostage returns, Gaza's destruction and Israel's coming election.
- “According to the Israeli Ministry of Heritage, 1,145 people were killed in Israel on October the 7th”
- “251 were abducted by Hamas and taken as hostages that day. Only 168 came back alive through rescues and deals.”
- “Today, as Palestinians, we are like people buried alive.”
Channel 4 put political accountability and Gaza's humanitarian situation at the centre of its coverage. It focused on the Israeli election, Netanyahu's fight for survival, the stalled US plan and the gap between memorial events in Israel and life in Gaza.
- “It's the first anniversary with all the surviving hostages back home, and it comes against the backdrop of an election where the worst security failure in the country's history threatens to end Benjamin Netanyahu's long career.”
- “Israel has now killed more than 74,000 Palestinians in Gaza, cramming its two million people into about a third of the territory.”
- “But it's a ceasefire in which Israel has killed more than 1,400 Palestinians, at least two more since dawn today.”
5 kept its coverage concise and human-focused, linking the Israeli memorials to hostage families and to the London protest. It gave space to the political argument around holding a march on the anniversary and noted police restrictions and arrests.
- “Today marks three years since Hamas-led attacks killed around 1,200 people in Israel and saw 251 people taken hostage.”
- “Despite calls from the Metropolitan Police to postpone it, hundreds marched through central London, saying they chose today to highlight what they describe as three years of genocide.”
- “The Met says two pro-Palestinian demonstrators were arrested during the march.”
BBC ONE West led with a detailed Kfar Aza report by Lucy Williamson, concentrating on unanswered questions about Israel's security failure and the political stakes before the election. It also carried the London arrests, including the five held outside the Board of Deputies.
- “At 6.29, they lowered the flag and opened old wounds.”
- “Three years on from Israel's worst security failure, there's been no state inquiry into how it happened.”
- “Five people have been arrested for inciting racial hatred in what police described as a spontaneous protest outside the Board of Deputies of British Jews in north London.”
ITV1 focused on the mood in Israel three years on, with Rachel Younger reporting from Tel Aviv and southern Israel on grief, rebuilding and the election. Its later coverage gave the clearest figures for the London protest, including the scale of the march and the number of arrests.
- “1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage by Hamas in the country's deadliest day in history.”
- “Blood is on their hands they chant furious about recent allegations that Netanyahu was warned a significant attack was coming.”
- “I think what that all adds up to, Tom, is that whoever wins this election on October 27, we are unlikely to see much changing on the ground in Gaza.”
