USS Abraham Lincoln docks in San Diego after record deployment amid morale concerns

The USS Abraham Lincoln has returned to California, docking in San Diego after one of the longest deployments ever recorded for a US aircraft carrier. The carrier spent more than 300 days at sea, including a record 264 continuous days, and most of that time was in the Middle East. It had been deployed last November and was originally due to conduct a six-month Western Pacific patrol, but about two months in it was sent to Fifth Fleet and took part in major combat operations, according to its captain.

The deployment supported the US-Israel war with Iran. The carrier and accompanying warships carried about 5,000 crew. Families of servicemen and women lined the quayside in San Diego to welcome home loved ones they had not seen for almost a year.

The long deployment took a toll. Reports during the deployment raised concerns about low morale and supply shortages. Eight crew members are known to have attempted suicide. There were also reports of sailors trying to jump overboard, and families raised concerns about mental health among the crew. In August, military families and lawmakers sounded the alarm about reported suicide attempts and food shortages aboard the carrier.

At the homecoming, the captain addressed those concerns. He said many of his sailors were away from home for the first time, on their first deployment and in combat for the first time. He said he understood the anxiety that might have caused, but said his team led the sailors through the experience. He added that most responded with honour, courage and commitment.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth was on board as the Abraham Lincoln sailed into San Diego. He accused the media of trying to make the strike group a symbol of a failed mission, and praised the crew for what he called historic work. He said the carrier strike group had carried out 10,000 sorties, 23,000 combat flight hours and almost 4,000 combat sorties, and dropped 1.5 million pounds of ordnance on the enemy.

The US has sent a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East. The USS Theodore Roosevelt is heading to the region to join the USS George H.W. Bush and the USS George Washington, which replaced the Lincoln. It is the second time since April that three US carriers have been deployed at the same time.

Channel Perspectives

What each channel focused on, with key quotes.

The World Today framed the return within wider Middle East operations, giving the record deployment figures and the morale crisis before balancing them with Pete Hegseth's praise and strike statistics. It also noted that the US has sent a third carrier to the region. Its tone was more geopolitical and it carried the strongest official pushback against negative coverage.

Key Quotes:
  • “It was plagued with reports of low morale and supply shortages during the lengthy deployment.”
  • “Eight crew members are known to have attempted suicide, with reports of sailors trying to jump overboard and families raising concerns about mental health among the 5,000 crew.”

BBC News led on the homecoming in San Diego and the human cost for the crew and families. It stressed the length of the deployment, the August warnings from families and lawmakers about suicide attempts and food shortages, and the captain's attempt to address anxiety. It did not report Pete Hegseth's remarks or the third carrier deployment.
