The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.

Max Verstappen won an incident-packed Singapore Grand Prix sprint race after Mercedes driver George Russell crashed out of the lead. He will start the main Grand Prix from pole, the 50th pole of his career.

Torrential rain delayed the start of the sprint. Officials tried to clear the track, but conditions stayed difficult, with part of the circuit dry and part wet. When the race began, Russell passed Verstappen and led, but he went too wide at the final corner at the end of the first lap and lost control. He was out.

The wet track caused chaos. Eight other drivers failed to finish, a record for a sprint race. Verstappen, who had never won in Singapore before, coped best and took the chequered flag. It was his 14th sprint victory, extending his own record. Lewis Hamilton made a superb start from sixth on the grid and finished second for Ferrari, with team-mate Charles Leclerc third.

Verstappen said: "We got of course a bit lucky with what happened with George out of the last corner and of course happy to win here in the sprint, but I also know that I want to win tomorrow, not today."

In qualifying for the Grand Prix, Verstappen took pole. He will need to keep the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at bay and hope for a drier track. Conditions are expected to be very hot. The circuit is difficult to overtake on and easy to hit the wall. Mercedes had engine issues. Hamilton likes wet weather, was third in the wet last time and would welcome more rain.
